ALEX IN THE CITY
too many people in one place.

Never before

Friday, December 8, 2006

So I knew a lot of people come for Basel, but I am just overwhelmed by
the traffic, craziness, and overcrowded everything. The juxtaposition of
bmw's next to homeless people and $2,000 handbags is just weird.

Here are more awful photos of Dita performing at the Delano, inside
nada, and the drum with mexican jumping beans at emanuel perrotin
gallery. More to come....

This is just a test of blogger's mobile blogging tools. If this is
working properly you should see a phone cam photo (I promise they will
only get better) I took of Bruce Nauman's neon piece Raw-War (1970)
featured in MOCA's show.

Hopefully, tomorrow I will post an interactive map of the events.

Also, check out the Google Labs tool that allows you to highlight text
and send it to your phone (firefox users only) . A link can be found on the left.

MIAMI I ART CENTRAL

It is official--I am more than excited for the opening of Art Basel 2006. Although, I have attended the fair every year, I always anticipate this week as a time to see old friends, an abundance of great art (ok, not always) and experience the nightlife.

Miami Art Central has contacted me about the events they will be hosting during Basel. Video: An Art, a History, 1965-2005 is excellent and features works by Johan Grimonprez, Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham and Thierry Kuntzel. It is a time consuming show (it took me 2 visits and aprx 4 hours to sit through everything), but well worth it. I highly recommend you visit before it ends on December 10. As you can see below and in my previous post, MAC will be hosting breakfast everday, a panel discussion and a talk by Dominic McIver Lopes.

Breakfast @ MAC
Wednesday - Sunday, December 6 – December 10, 2006, from 9 am to Noon
Come visit Miami Art Central’s new exhibition Video: an Art, a History, 1965-2005, and join us for coffee and a light breakfast.

ALL THIS ART IS MAKING YOU HUNGRY

It is unusual for me to ever skip a meal, but during Art Basel you never know what you're missing when you stop to get a bit to eat.

As a vegetarian I have always found Miami to be a bit unfriendly, but here are my recommendations:

DESIGN DISTRICT:

BECAUSE YOU'RE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE | SOYKA, The food is standard but good. You go for the atmosphere drinks and proximity. Sunday-Thursday 11am - 11pm; Friday and Saturday11am - midnight, 582 NE 4TH Court, 305.759.3117

JE SUIS AMERICAN | CANE A SUCRE, A quaint little French bakery, diamond in the rough of cuban bakeries. Cafe au lait anyone? Monday- Friday 7am - 6pm; Saturday 8am - 4pm, 3535 NE Second Avenue, 305.572.0111

HOT DOG! | Literally, I have an elementary school crush on the owner of DOGMA GRILL. They have veggie dogs with gourmet toppings, need I say more. Also check out his new out door chill spot/carwash KARMA across the street. (its open late) 11am - 7pm daily, 7030 Biscayne Boulevard, 305.759.3433

LET'S GO ALREADY | ANDIAMO, Gourmet pizza is a yes. Monday - Thursday 11am - 11pm; Friday - Sunday 11am - Midnight, 5600 Biscayne Boulevard

ARTIST FOOD | ORANGE CAFE, cheap and quick paninis, 2 NE 40th St, Miami, FL 33137, call for hours (305) 571-4070

MEET ME HERE AND BUY ME LUNCH | ELEMENTS (hey, you'll likely spot Richard Tuttle here on Tuesday having lunch with his pal Craig Robbins) http://www.elementsrestaurant.net, its not the cheapest, but it is delicious and veggie friendly.
